RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – Life science logistics announced last week that it would expand to the Triangle, investing in building 132,000 square feet of space that will provide temperature-controlled and cold storage space for the company’s life science clients . Now we have more details.
The company plans to hire between 50 and 100 jobs to staff the facility, which could open as early as April 2022, John Blackington, director of business development, told WRAL TechWire in an interview on Monday.
A slightly edited version of the interview between Blackington and WRAL TechWire reporter Jason Parker can be found below the video interview.
Jason Parker, WRAL TechWire (TW): What made the company decide to expand into the Triangle?
John Blackington, Business Development Director, Life Science Logistics (Blackington): Raleigh-Durham has always been a major pharmaceutical hub, as the name suggests RTP. We’ve had an eye on the region for quite some time now, to keep an eye on it, and we’ve had a few customers, and some potential customers are growing in the region with manufacturing and research and development. With that comes the need for storage and distribution of pharmaceuticals and medical devices, biologicals, things of that nature. We reached a critical mass in deciding to install a facility in this area that would meet some of the needs of the companies that provide these manufacturing services from that area.
TW: Where is the facility located?
Blackington: It’s a new facility being built quite close to the airport. It is relatively close to the airport for storage and distribution needs.
TW: We understand that this is a 132,000 square foot facility, with two main service functions that the facility will provide to customers. Can you tell us about the establishment and these services?
Blackington: The facility is 132,000 square feet. It will have a controlled room temperature, which is 20 to 25 degrees Celsius, as well as a refrigerated temperature which is 2 to 8 degrees Celsius.
Dallas-Based Life Sciences Logistics Expands To RTP, To Hire For 50-100 New Jobs
TW: The company had previously announced that it would hire between 50 and 100 positions for this facility. What can you tell us about the hiring plans for the installation?
Blackington: The range of jobs is so wide due to the number of clients that we may or may not have at this establishment. Obviously, the more clients there are, the more jobs there are, which is what we hope for in the region. The timeline for hiring these folks and putting them up and running has probably passed in early 2022. The facility is tentatively scheduled to go live in April 2022, so I imagine that at that time, or a little before that. this, we ‘I will begin the hiring process to have staff in the establishment. These jobs range from warehouse workers to site managers and site managers. There is also a quality component in the positions that we will have hired there, in addition to the maintenance of the installations and some back office functions as well.
TW: Can you share your personal thoughts with us, or how the company sees the talent market in the Triangle, especially in the life science industry?
Blackington: We are very excited to expand in the region as the talent pool is very experienced in this area, especially with research and development and universities in the region. There is no shortage of talents or expertise in the field. We are very excited to grow in the region and see what the talent pool has to offer for these positions.
TW: What is an important trend that you have observed in the life science industry, including how this trend is playing out in the state of North Carolina and in the Triangle?
Blackington: The life sciences industry is booming as a whole. With the need for new drugs and the development of them, a lot of these companies that make these drugs are based in the RTP zone, so the growth of that zone, and the growth of these companies for new drugs and research and development has led to growth in the region, and for a company like ours to plant a flag and start storing and distributing drugs.
TW: What is the company’s total investment in the facility and in the region?
Blackington: We think it will be around the $ 15 to $ 20 million mark, between investing in the facility and investing in jobs. We are very happy to be part of the community and the region.
