‘Major investment:’ Lyon administrators approve plan for downtown boutique hotel

A new 79-room hotel may not be far in the distant future for wedding guests, concert goers and tourists heading to Lyon for an overnight stay.

After meeting for more than six hours on Monday evening, Lyon’s board of directors unanimously approved a hotel development plan. Before accepting the proposal, the administrators shared their concerns and demands regarding the development agreement, which is expected to be voted on next month.

“I will not vote for a development agreement until we address the parking ordinance,” Pro Tem Mayor Mark Browning said Monday evening. “It has to be done at the same time or before.”

Browning expressed his frustrations with the lack of available parking spaces in the city on Monday night and said old policies — like the requirement that off-street commercial parking be within 700 feet of the building it serves — must be reviewed and modified.

“It’s a problem created by the city, and it’s something the city needs to address,” he said.

The plan discussed and approved Monday night comes from Colorado developer Moss Rock Development LLC. The company hopes to build a boutique hotel on Main Street and has already purchased plots 343, 349 and 355 Main St. for the site.

“We have (brought together) the best team of experts to design what we think is needed for a sustainable and viable hotel in this city to bring economic development and jobs,” said Agnès Rey-Giraud of Moss Rock Development. LLC Monday night. .

City administrator Victoria Simonsen said Moss Rock spent $1 million to buy the plots and planned to invest another $8 million to construct the building.

Total hotel cost estimates were not immediately available after the meeting. Moss Rock officials did not respond to requests for comment by the Tuesday deadline.

“I think it will be a significant investment,” added Simonsen.

The boutique hotel was first revealed to the public in November. Plans call for it to include a lobby, bar, cafe and rooftop terrace bar with indoor and outdoor dining.

Before trustees cast their vote on Monday night, dozens of residents took turns to give their thoughts — for, against, or a bit of both — on the plan.

Each director agreed on the issue of parking and committed to working on a resolution during the limited time some have before their term expires.

“I wish my successor administrators good luck in helping to resolve this issue, and it’s been emphasized here – we have two years to come up with something,” administrator Greg Lowell said.
