John Lawrie doubles Angus workforce after seven-figure investment

Metals recycling and decommissioning firm John Lawrie nearly doubled its workforce after a seven-figure investment in its Angus repurposing facility.

The Aberdeen-based company, with a large operation in Montrose, is one of the UK’s largest buyers and suppliers of tubular steel products.

At the Montrose base, the company reuses steel pipes from the oil and gas industry to make steel products for the construction pile industry.

Since the beginning of this year, John Lawrie has been expanding his facilities, aiming to offer services to new clients.

President and CEO Vic Sinclair said, “Following the purchase of several new assets, we are now perfectly positioned to serve new clients in the mining, water well and minerals industries.

“This allows us to maximize the opportunity to reuse products that would otherwise be wasted.

“Our objective is to continue to advance our tubes business, to expand our service offering and to reach new markets with which we have never worked before. “

The company’s new facility in Montrose includes manufacturing drill pipe, casing products and pipe for rail and highways.

With seven new CNC lathe machines and new friction welding facilities, John Lawrie is one of the few UK companies to offer such a diverse range of services.

With a new inspection building, these new facilities are in addition to the existing fully automated pipe cleaning and saw cutting facilities.

John Lawrie employs a team of around 30 Angus residents and recent development has seen its workforce almost double in the past year.

It works closely with the Montrose Port Authority three miles from its Forties Road operation.

The company also has a decommissioning site at the Port of Montrose to manage offshore oil and gas infrastructure that has reached the end of its lifespan.

The investment of one million pounds allowed John Lawrie Tubulars to acquire new equipment.

In addition to a site at Scunthorpe, the company has plans for another decommissioning facility at the Port of Dundee.

The company is also present in North America where it is a key supplier of steel pipe from its base in Houston, Texas.

John Lawrie Group is one of the country’s leading metal recycling companies, processing approximately 200,000 tonnes of metal annually.

The company was founded in the 1930s in Aberdeen as a scrap dealer.
